"Why" - documentary time line:

2010 Late July/Early August: Catch up with a few artists in their cities as they prepare for Burning Man, capturing their lives at the moment. Meet with Burning Man org leads, bounce ideas, make sure they're on board, arrange on-playa meetings. (Done!)

2010 Burning Man: document these same projects and others as they arrive on-playa and set up for the event, then the event itself. Questions will be asked about why they do what they do, their artistic process, their lives as a result of their decisions to live creatively, and questions about themselves or their process they would like to know the scientific answers to. Also (if funding is found, set up recording equipment way out by the trash fence a few times and interview participants. If funding not found in time, this will be done in 2011.) The entire time, I will also be capturing stunning images of people, art, and the sunrise. (Done!)

2011 Spring: Kickstarter and grant proposals to raise funding. Hopefully by summer, begin to interview artists, burners, neurologists, evolutionary biologists, and sociologists. The time line has shifted. The Kickstarter video and traveling green screen interviews it will make possible will happen in the fall of 2011.

On the academic front, the wish list of interviewees so far includes:

  • Robert Sapolsky ("Biology and Human Behavior: the Neuroscience of Individuality" Stanford University Ph.D., Rockefeller University, Teaching Company Lecture)
  • Daniel Levitin ("This Is Your Brain On Music," Book)
  • Members of The Dana Foundation (Paper: Learning, Arts, and the Brain)
  • Jeanette Norden ("Roots of Human Behavior" Ph.D., Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Teaching Company Lecture)
  • Stephen P. Hinshaw ("Origins of the Human Mind" Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles/Berkeley, Teaching Company Lecture)
  • Anthony A. Goodman ("Lifelong Health: Achieving Optimum Well-Being at Any Age" Montana State University M.D., Cornell Medical College, Teaching Company Lecture)
  • Tony Robins ("Why Do We Do What We Do?" Internet Lecture )
  • Malcom Gladwell (Brilliant author of such books as "Blink" and :The Tipping Point")
  • Etc, etc. Suggest more: why@whydocumentary.com !
  • And of course, the key artists and Burning Man organization leads should be green screen interviewed separately as a supplement to on-playa interviews where sound could not be controlled.

2011 Burning Man: Follow up on new artists and art projects, film scripts and shots meant to specifically illustrate concepts I know will be covered.

2011 Fall: Kickstarter video and traveling green-screen interviews with burners, artists, and scientists.

2012 Fall: Final Edit of "Why" Documentary, clips for VJ use, and clips to be triggered for Why 2013 interactive art project, complete basic physical design for Why 2012 interactive art project instillation.

2013 Summer: Build Why 2013 Interactive Art Project, basically an interactive version of the documentary but with alternate footage triggered by participants within a structure made to resemble a walk through the human mind.

2013 Burning Man: Deliver "Why" project to playa, add dust, enjoy.
